Church History
Greater Saint John AME Church was a part of one of the oldest churches in the Trio Community. After being separated from Saint John AME Church in March 1959, it was renamed Greater Saint John AME Church. It was at that point that a cornerstone was laid.
The earlier Pastors were Rev. Bonner, Rev C.C. Burgess, Rev. M. Jenkins, Rev. B. Ravenell, and Rev. N. Morris. Although these Pastors are now deceased, their memories and love for Christ will forever be a monumental part of Greater Saint John AME Church. The latter pastors were Rev. Melvin McClennon, Rev. Clyde Henryhand, the late Rev. Rodney Jenkins, and Rev. Alice P. Wright.
In September 2017, we were blessed to have our current Pastor, Rev. Gloretia Spann. Rev. Spann is the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Venning Sr., the widow of the late Alfred Spann, mother of four children and grandmother of seven. She was born and raised in Wando, S.C., where she graduated from Cainhoy High School in 1973. She then furthered pursued her education by obtaining a Bachelor in Science from Texas College in 1976 then spent a year in the Peace Corp, where she served in Central America Honduras. In 2004, she accepted the call into the ministry. In 2014, Rev. Spann completed her Master of Divinity from Payne Theological Seminary. She has pastored various churches in the Central Conference before her pastoral assignment at Greater Saint John AME Church.
